Excerpts of importance:
"The researchers conducted a series of six studies with 350 American adults and nearly 420 university students in Canada, posing a number of hypothetical questions and scenarios to the groups. In one study, participants found a description of an untrustworthy person to be more representative of atheists than of Christians, Muslims, gay men, feminists or Jewish people. Only rapists were distrusted to a comparable degree."
"One motivation for the research was a Gallup poll that found that only 45 per cent of American respondents would vote for a qualified atheist president...The figure was the lowest among several hypothetical minority candidates. Poll respondents rated atheists as the group that least agrees with their vision of America, and that they would most disapprove of their children marrying."

Excerpts of importance:
"Our latest survey finds that, among the top natural scientists, disbelief is greater than ever — almost total."
"Our survey found near universal rejection of the transcendent by NAS natural scientists. Disbelief in God and immortality among NAS biological scientists was 65.2% and 69.0%, respectively, and among NAS physical scientists it was 79.0% and 76.3%. Most of the rest were agnostics on both issues, with few believers. We found the highest percentage of belief among NAS mathematicians (14.3% in God, 15.0% in immortality). Biological scientists had the lowest rate of belief (5.5% in God, 7.1% in immortality), with physicists and astronomers slightly higher (7.5% in God, 7.5% in immortality)"

A flash site to see the religious demographics of each state (minus Hawaii and Alaska). In Illinois, the percentage of "no religion" is 15%. This percentage probably includes atheists and agnostics, but also those are are religious (believe in god) but don't identify with a particular religion.
